Uniting For Peace Resolution (377A) - Could the UN Protect Palestinians?

By Irving Lee

As the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York City on September 22 to the 29th 2025, CPI will support Uniting for Peace Resolution (377A) calling on the General Assembly to assemble an emergency meeting addressing the Genocide taking in place in Gaza by the state of Israel. The UN Security Council has passed numerous resolutions demanding a ceasefire and steps in halting the genocidal and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people but only to be vetoed by the United States representative. The United States has consistently defended Israel’s war crimes.

Resolution 337A will bypass the Security Council and a vote of 2/3 of its members can enact action including:

·      Call on states to enact a military embargo and comprehensive sanctions against Israel with means for enforcement.

·      Remove UN credentials for the state of Israel as it did to Apartheid South Africa.

·      Activate anti-apartheid procedures to address Israeli apartheid.

·      Mandate a criminal tribunal to address Israeli war crimes

·      Mandate an armed, multinational, UN protection force to deploy to Gaza (and, ultimately, to the West Bank), acting at the request of the State of Palestine, to protect civilians, reporters, medical staff, open entry points via land and sea, facilitate humanitarian aid, preserve evidence of Israeli crimes, and assist in recovery and reconstruction.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres with support of at least one Security Council member or member states of the General Assembly can call for the special session after a Security Council veto.

CPI opposes any attempts to threaten and bribe UN representatives to vote or abstain the resolution if it reaches the GA. This includes attempts to water down language protecting the Palestinian people.

The Uniting for Peace Resolution has been used against France, Great Britain and Israel in 1956. The three nations invaded the Sinai Peninsula after Egyptian President Gamal Nassar nationalized the Suez Canal. A special session was called after France and Britain vetoed the Security Council of resolution demanding withdrawal of the invading forces. It was overturned by the General Assembly and it adapted a UN Emergency Force to supervise the withdrawal, to secure and supervise the cessation of hostilities.

As the UNGA convenes, the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory just released its report concluding that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people. This report confirms what other international human rights agencies Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have reported.  International Criminal Court, International Court of Justice and UN’s Special Rapporteur have also reported the genocidal acts and have called for action to stop it.

On September 18th, a rally was held outside the United Nations supporting the resolution. CPI founder Caleb Maupin was able to interview Rock Musician Roger Waters about his support for the Palestinians and Houthis, as well as many other participants.
