Roger Waters Stuns UN Crowd: “We Stand With the Houthis!”

Rock legend Roger Waters voiced strong support for Yemen’s Houthis during an appearance near the United Nations, where he was interviewed by Caleb Maupin, founder of the Center for Political Innovation.

Waters said the Houthis’ defiance in the face of U.S. military pressure showed “remarkable” courage. “Standing with the people of Palestine is the right thing to do today,” he declared. “So we stand with the Houthis and with the people of Yemen.”

The Pink Floyd co-founder also renewed his sharp condemnation of Israeli actions in Gaza, calling them “criminally insane” and “genocide … the worst crime that any of us have ever dreamt of.” He accused Western governments of complicity, naming the U.S., U.K., France, and Germany.

Appealing to younger activists, Waters urged them to act daily for justice: “When you wake up in the morning, think to yourself, what can I do today? And then do it … We have to put a stop to the occupation of Palestine. We must free Palestine, the country, from the river to the sea. And we have to do it now. It’ll be too late.”

As the UN General Assembly opened its annual session, Waters also directed his message to world leaders: “Come on, guys. Get on board. You all know that we’re right and what you’ve been doing is wrong. You’ve got to stand up to the United States of America and the UK and the other Zionist mobsters in the world and say no justice.”

Maupin, aside from conducting the interview, is the author of Who Are the Houthis? What Are They Fighting For?, a book offering context on the Yemeni movement Waters praised for its solidarity with Palestine.
