Flashback to 1984: Jesse Jackson & Anti-Imperialism

With the passing of Jesse Jackson on February 17th, Center for Political Innovation founder and director Caleb Maupin decided to highlight how he related to Communist and anti-imperialist forces, specifically during his 1984 presidential campaign. Caleb Maupin discussed the decline of the New Communist Movement in the early 1980s and how Jesse Jackson’s foreign policy and rhetoric fit into a wider trend of Marxists moving into the Democratic Party amid confusion. Caleb explained how Michael Harrington, Amiri Baraka, Louis Farrakhan, and many other key players fit into Jesse Jackson’s unique role in American politics during the 1984 election. Much of this history and analysis can be found in Caleb Maupin’s short history text, The New Communist Movement: Party-Building in 1970s America.
